Format	Elimination by bad points. Win by fall = 0 points; win by decision = 1 point; loss by 2-1 decision = 3 points; loss by 3-0 decision = 3 points; loss by fall = 3 points. Three judges gave decisions, thus all decisions were either 2-1 or 3-0. Five bad points eliminated a wrestler.

There were no favorites in this class, which was considered wide open. The finalists would be Soviet Konstantin Vyrupayev, Romanian Francisc Horvath, and Sweden’s Edvin Vesterby. Vyrupayev had actually lost his first round match to Horvath, but continued to win after that to make the final round. In the final round, however, he defeated Vesterby by unanimous decision. All three finalists ended up with four bad points and a 1-1 record against each other, with Vyrupayev winning gold because Vesterby’s victory over Horvath had been by split decision. Vesterby would return in 1960 and place fourth in this class at Roma.
