Format	Scoring by negative points, with negative points given for any result short of a fall (win by fall-0.0; win by superior decision-0.5; win by decision-1.0; draw-2.0; loss by decision-3.0; loss by superior decision-3.5; loss by fall-4.0). Accumulation of 6 negative points eliminated the wrestler. When three or fewer wrestlers remained, they advanced to a final round, with preliminary results carried forward.

This was effectively a new class, although it was called the heavyweight class. The previous version of that weight class was now called the super-heavyweights. The favorite was Sweden’s Per Svensson, the 1970-71 World Champion and 1969-70 European Champion, but he surprisingly went out after two rounds, the result of a draw and a loss by fall. With Svensson out the draw was open. After five rounds the two finalists were determined, Soviet Nikolay Yakovenko, the 1972 European Champion, and Romanian Nicolae Martinescu, a light-heavyweight bronze medalist at the 1968 Olympics. Yakovenko was well ahead on bad points, 1.0 to 5.5, but in his round five win over Bulgarian Khristo Ignatov, Yakovenko was injured and had to withdraw from the final round, giving the gold medal to Martinescu.
