Norway was a clear favorite, as the defending gold medalist, the 2025 World Champions, and having won three of the four World Cup relays in the 2025/26 season. Their biggest challenge was expected to come from France, with Italy and Sweden also considered for the podium.

The race was run on a snowy day, and Martin Uldal gave Norway a 50.3 second lead on the first leg, with France trailing because Fabien Claude had to run one extra penalty lap. Uldal handed off to Johan-Olav Botn, already the 20 km gold medalist, but he struggled with his shooting, missing three targets. At exchange #2, France’s Émilien Jacquelin and Finland’s Tero Seppälä handed off to their teammates, both with a three-second lead over Sweden in third and a 16-second lead over Norway in fourth position.

On the third leg Quentin Fillon Maillet had only two extra shots and France was never headed, although Sturla Holm Lægreid brought Norway back into second place with a perfect shooting.

Éric Perrot took the lead after the first prone shooting with a perfect round and then increased the gap to enter the shooting range for the final shots well ahead. Finally, Perrot was able to withstand Christiansen’s comeback and preserved the victory by almost 10 seconds over Norway. Sweden took the bronze medal, finishing 57 seconds behind France as Samuelsson eased off in the final lap when he saw he could not close the gap with Norway.

Quentin Fillon Maillet won his third gold medal of the 2026 Winter Olympics, after winning the sprint and mixed relay. He would later add a bronze medal in the mass start. Éric Perrot also won his third medal, after gold in the mixed relay and silver in the 20 km. It was Holm Lægreid’s fourth biathlon medal in Trentino, and he would eventually win five medals, with three silver and two bronze medals.
