The mixed relay was the first event on the biathlon programme at Milano-Cortina 2026. The event saw men ski the first two legs followed by two women’s legs, all over 6 km. The mixed relay had been held since Sochi 2014 but this was only the second time in the 4 x 6 km format. Norway was the defending champion, while France had taken silver at Beijing 2022. Two mixed relays had been held during the 2025/26 World Cup season, with France winning the first over Italy and Norway in November, and Italy triumphing over France and Czechia in late January.

Norway started strongly, leading through the men’s legs, with Germany in second and France third on the exchange to the women’s legs. Lou Jeanmonnot then skied the fastest female leg of the entire competition, putting France into the lead, which Julia Simon maintained on the anchor to give France the gold medal. Behind them, Norway fell back on the final leg to fall off the podium into fourth place, as Maren Kirkeeide missed five shots in the last standing shoot and with three extra shots and two extra lap penalties her lap time was only 17th of 21 biathletes, even if she had the best ski time when entering the shooting range.

Behind France, Italy’s women, Dorothea Wierer and Lisa Vittozzi, both shot cleanly to move ahead of Germany into a silver medal, Germany taking bronze with Franziska Preuß in the anchor leg. It would be Germany’s only biathlon medal at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games and the worst result for Germany since Innsbruck 1976 when only two events were competed.
