The minimum weight limit in this division had decreased from 52 kg to 51 kg since Tokyo. Reigning World Champion Abdumalik Khalokov (UZB) was the top seed and favorite to win this division, and had little in the way of opposition, winning all of his four bouts unanimously. His opponent in the final was expected to be Bulgarian Javier Ibáñez, who was originally of Cuban origin, but Ibáñez was defeated by a majority 4-1 decision in the semi-final by Munarbek Seitbek Uulu (KGZ), bronze medalist from the 2023 World Championships.

Both Khalokov and Ibáñez were previous winners at this division at the Summer Youth Olympics, Ibáñez in 2014 when representing Cuba, and Khalokov four years later. Australian Charlie Senior, who had emigrated to Australia from Great Britain when he was 2-years-old, was the other losing semi-finalist.
