The men’s medley relay had been contested 16 times at the Olympic Games, and the United States had won it 15 times, failing only in 1980 when the USA did not send a team to the Moskva Olympics. But the streak would end in Paris.

The United States won the second heat of the preliminary round, but was only the third qualifier after France and China went 1-2 in the first heat.

The USA never led in the final as China took the early lead on the strength of Xu Jiayu’s opening backstroke leg. France took over them on the third leg, but the USA moved into second, as Caeleb Dressel recorded 49.41 in the butterfly leg. Then, Pan Zhanle, the 100 metre gold medalist in world record time, took over. Hunter Armstrong split 47.19 as the American anchor, but Pan went 1.27 seconds faster, splitting 45.92 and bringing China the gold medal, and ending the USA streak. Pan’s split was the fastest ever relay leg.

France held on for the bronze medal. Léon Marchand, who swam the breaststroke leg for them, won his fifth medal of the Paris 2024 Olympics, after four individual gold medals.
