Latvia was the defending gold medalist in men’s 3x3 basketball, but Serbia had the best international record, winning six of the eight men’s World Cups, and having also won the bronze medal at Tokyo 2020. The Russian Olympic Committee team was the silver medalist at Tokyo but was not eligible to compete in Paris.

Latvia dominated the round-robin phase, winning all seven of their games, with the Netherlands second with five wins and two losses. Those two teams advanced directly to the semi-finals. The United States, dominant in full-court basketball, lost one of its players, Jimmer Fredette, to injury, and did not advance from the round-robin.

France, Lithuania, Serbia, and Poland played in the quarter-finals, with France defeating Serbia and Lithuania taking down Poland. The semi-finals were somewhat of an upset, as France and the Netherlands defeated the two Baltic nations, Latvia and Lithuania.

The Netherlands won a surprising gold medal by narrowly defeating France, 18-17, in the gold medal match. The Netherlands had won two silver medals at the FIBA World Cup, in 2017-2018, but was not considered among the medal contenders coming into Paris. Lithuania, whose only medal at the World Cup was a 2022 silver, took the bronze medal, defeating Latvia, 21-18.
