With China having three of the world’s top four rankings, the hardest part for the Chinese was to qualify, as they were limited to two doubles entries. In the end, the top two world ranked pairs qualified, namely the top seeds Huang Yaqiong and Zheng Siwei, silver medalists from the previous Games, and second ranked Huang Dongping and Feng Yanzhe. The top seeds all advanced to the quarter-finals after the group games, the only upset coming when Toh Ee Wei and her partner Chen Tang Jie of Malaysia defeated the number two Chinese seeds Huang and Feng by a score of 17-21, 21-15, 21-16 in their final group match, both pairs having already qualified for the knock-out rounds.
Due to this loss, it meant that the two Chinese pairs met in the quarter-finals. In a match of the highest quality, Huang and Zheng were the victors, the score of 21-16, 21-15 not reflecting the closeness of the contest. The remaining quarter-finals were contested between doubles from Asian countries, with third seeds Seo Seung-Jae and Chae Yu-Jeong (KOR) defeating Tse Ying Suet and Jordan Tang (HKG) by 21-15, 21-10, fourth-seeded Arisa Higashino and Yuta Watanabe (JPN) defeating Sapsiree Taerattanachai and Dechapol Puavaranukroh (THA) by 23-21, 21-14, and unseeded Koreans Jeong Na-Eun and Kim Won-Ho defeating Toh and Chen (MAS) by 21-19, 21-14.
With the two doubles pairs from the Republic of Korea qualifying for the semi-finals, that nation was guaranteed at least one medal. They met in a thrilling semi-final contest, with the unseeded Jeong and Kim overcoming their compatriots Seo and Chae by 21-16, 20-22, 23-21 in a match lasting 77 minutes. The other semi-final was more one-sided, with Huang and Zheng defeating their Japanese opponents Higashino and Watanabe by 21-14, 21-15.
The exhausting contest in the semi-finals looked to have taken a lot out of the Koreans Jeong and Kim, as they were relatively easily defeated in the final by the Chinese pair Huang and Zheng by 21-8, 21-11. The Japanese pair Higashino and Watanabe took the bronze medal by defeating the other Korean semi-finalists Seo and Chae by 21-13, 22-20.
