The Croatian brother pair of Martin and Valent Sinković had won gold in this event at Tokyo 2020, after taking gold in the double sculls at Rio 2016. They were considered among the strongest rowers in the world in any boat and were the clear favorites. Great Britain was considered a medal contender, with the team of Oliver Wynne-Griffith and Tom George. They had won the 2023 Luzern Regatta, medaled at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships, taking silver in 2023 and bronze in 2022, and won gold at the recent 2024 European Championships.
In the final, Great Britain set a blazing early pace, leading by over one second at 500 metres, and still led through 1,500 metres, followed by the Romanian boat, the only one within two seconds of Britain at 1,500 metres. The Sinkovićs seemed out of it, fifth at 500 metres and fourth at 1,500 metres, but they could not be denied, posting the fastest finish to defend their gold medal in the event. Great Britain held on for the silver medal, as Switzerland came up to take bronze, edging out Romania.
The Sinković’s gold medal was the third time that the same pair had repeated as Olympic Champions in the event, after Jörg and Bernd Landvoigt (GDR) in 1976-80, and the Kiwi pair of Eric Murray and Hamish Bond in 2012-16.
