The men’s trap shooting event at the 2024 Summer Olympics took place on July 29 and 30 at the National Shooting Centre, in Châteauroux, France. The competition featured 30 shooters from 24 nations.
In the qualification round, four men scored 123 out of 125 targets to qualify for the final, with Qi Ying securing the top qualifying spot after a shoot-off. Two others tied on 122 reached the final after a further shoot-off.
The final was contested under intense heat, giving an incentive to those competitors who had the necessary focus and endurance. World record holder Nathan Hales of Great Britain displayed remarkable composure, hitting 48 out of 50 targets in the final, setting a new Olympic record and clinching the gold medal. Asian Games champion Qi Ying secured the silver with 44 hits, whilst Guatemala’s Jean-Pierre Brol, at 41 years old, earned the bronze with 35 hits, marking only the second Olympic medal in his country’s history.
This victory marked Great Britain’s first Olympic shooting gold since 2012. Hales credited his success to collaboration with 2012 double trap gold medalist Peter Wilson, stating “It’s absolutely a dream come true. I worked with Peter over the past couple of years which has been great help as well.”
Neither reigning Olympic champion Jiří Lipták nor World champion Matthew Coward-Holley got close to reaching the final.
