Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway was the defending gold medalist and had mostly been the top runner at this distance since Tokyo 2020, ranking #1 in the world in 2021-2023, although he had been beaten at the 2023 World Championships by Britain’s Josh Kerr. The two were expected to battle for gold and silver at Paris, with the 2020 silver medalist and 2019 World Champion Timothy Cheruiyot (KEN) also looking to medal.
All three made the final along with the American favorite Yared Nuguse, who was joined by his teammates Cole Hocker and the young Hobbs Kessler.
Ingebrigtsen shot to the front at the gun, taking the field through an opening lap of 54.82, as the field strung out single-file behind the fast pace. He continued to lead through 800 (1:51.38) and 1,200 metres (2:47.27), followed by Cheruiyot and Kerr. On the final backstretch, Hocker and Nuguse passed Cheruiyot, with Hocker now challenging Ingebrigtsen.
On the straight, Kerr moved past Ingebrigtsen on the outside and then Hocker passed him on the inside. Hocker had the strongest finish to win a very surprising gold medal in 3:27.65, with Kerr taking silver and Nuguse closing fast, taking bronze only 1/100th second behind Kerr. Ingebrigtsen faded to fourth while Kessler finished fifth.
The final was the fastest and closest ever Olympic 1,500 metres as all three medalists were within 0.15 seconds of each other. Hocker broke Ingebrigtsen’s Olympic record and the North American record. The USA threesome finished 1-3-5, its best “team” finish since 1912, when they went 1-2-4.
