America’s AAU national amateur champion John Daley had made an impression in the quarter finals, knocking the Hungarian Széles to the canvas twice on the way to a clear points decision. In the last semi-final however, he appeared to lose the verdict to the South African fighter Harry Isaacs. When the shouting, booing American fans, who had started for the ring, had been quieted by the Amsterdam police, the judges then announced they had made a mistake and Daley had in fact defeated Isaacs. Despite South African appeals, this decision was upheld.
The other semi-final also saw controversy. Irish boxer Frank Traynor was initially disqualified against Italy’s Vittorio Tamagnini. Following a protest it appears he was reinstated although some reports do not mention that. In any case, Tamagnini advanced to the final against Daley, where he handled the American, winning by decision to win the gold medal.
