There were no returning Olympic medalists to the C-1 1000 at the 1968 Summer Games, which left West Germany’s Detlef Lewe, the reigning World and two-time European champion, in an excellent position to claim gold. The only other recent major international medalist in Mexico City was Jiří Čtvrtečka of Czechoslovakia, who had been third at the most recent Europeans. Tibor Tatai and Vitaly Galkov were the representatives from Hungary and the Soviet Union, the other nations who had medalled at the last European and World Championships. In the opening round, Ivan Patzaichin set an Olympic record while winning his heat and relegating Galkov to the repêchage, which he managed to win. Lewe then broke that record in his own heat, besting Tatai and Čtvrtečka in the process, although all qualified. Tatai was dominant in the medal round, however, winning gold ahead of Lewe by a margin of over two seconds, while Lewe was almost the same distance ahead of Galkov. The Soviet, however, did not have the same luxury of open water between him and Čtvrtečka, and he managed to take bronze by a margin of only 0.32 seconds. Patzaichin struggled in the final and came in seventh, but did not go home empty handed, as he was one of the Games’ champions in the C-2 1000.
