Just before the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics, the event lost one of the seeded fighters in the division when Michael O’Reilly tested positive for a banned diuretic. This helped leave the field clear for Arlen López of Cuba to breeze through the competition.

Compatriots Robeisy Ramírez and Julio César La Cruz had already taken gold for Cuba earlier in the tournament so López provided the third gold for the Caribbean nation when he outpointed 20-year-old Uzbek Bektemir Melikuziyev to claim the Olympic title. López, the 2015 world champion, was a fighter who was equally adept at fighting on the inside or at long range and showed great balance and accuracy.
