Marjorie Gestring won the women’s springboard gold medal, although she was only 13-years-old. At 13 years, 267 days old, she remains the youngest Olympic individual champion among women in any sport. Gestring returned to the 1948 Olympic Trials and just missed making the Olympic team, placing fourth. The silver medalist in this event was Peggy Rawls who had finished second in the event in 1932. A few days later, she would add a bronze medal in swimming in the 4 x 100 metre freestyle relay. The bronze medalist on springboard was Dorothy Poynton-Hill who, when she was only 13 in 1928, had won a silver medal in this event. She also won gold medals on platform in both 1932 and 1936.
