The gold and silver medalists from 1964 were again favored – Romuald Klim (URS) and Gyula Zsivótzky (HUN). Zsivótzky was best on marks as the world record holder, one set only one month before the Mexico Olympics. But Klim always defeated him head-to-head, having done so nine straight times, including the 1966 European Championships. Zsivótzky opened in the final with 72.26 (237-1) to lead in round one. He improved in rounds two and three and still led, before fouling his fourth throw. Klim then moved ahead with 73.28 (240-5), but Zsivótzky answered on his fifth throw with 73.36 (240-8¼), and that would win the gold medal. Lázár Lovász (HUN) and Japan’s Takeo Sugawara tied for bronze with 69.78 (228-11¼) but Lovász won that medal based on the second longest throw (69.38-69.06).
