Earlier in 1980 Sweden’s Pär Arvidsson had set the world record in the 100 fly with 54.15 at a meet in Austin, Texas. In Moscow it was rumored that he was feeling below par with a virus, but he still managed to win gold in the event, though his time of 54.92 did not approach his world record. Arvidsson had been bronze medalist in the 100 fly at the 1978 World Championships and a silver medalist at the 1977 Europeans. He graduated from U Cal Berkeley with a degree in economics and later attended Harvard Business School. The day before this final, West German Michael Groß swam 54.69 at a meet in Canada, and 10 days after the final, at the US Nationals, William Paulus won in 54.34, followed by Matt Gribble in 54.51.
