Eight fighters competed in a single-elimination tournament. The event was won by Chinese Taipei’s Chen Yi-An, who defeated American Debra Holloway in the final, although Holloway fought the final with a broken finger. The 1987 World Champion, Tennur Yerlizu, did not compete in Seoul. She had been the dominant fighter in this class, also winning the European Championships 1982 and 1984 and the European Cup in 1986-87.
