The LW2 event (LW stands for Locomotor Winter) is for competitors with a severe disability in one leg, which may be a result of an amputation, or arthrodesis in the leg and hip. Its competitors typically use only a single ski, and are supported by two “outriggers”, a ski pole with a small ski on the end.
As in Sarajevo, where this had also been an exhibition event, the competition was won by Alexander Spitz. The West German would also collect a grand total of 11 Paralympic medals during five different Games. At the 1988 Paralympics in Innsbruck, he would capture gold in this event, the giant slalom, and the slalom, while failing to finish in the downhill event.
