In January, the Italian relay team had bettered the world record at the European Championships. Their time of 4:48.54 didn’t survive the first heat at the Olympics, as both Japan and China went below that time. The final also saw Italy and Canada compete, the latter team having won the relay at the World Championships earlier that month. The Italians regained the world record, bettering their old time by some 2.5 seconds.
