Bob pilot André Lange, together with his brakeman Kevin Kuske, became the most successful German bobsledders of all time with four Olympic golds (2002 four-man, 2006 two-man and four-man, 2010 two-man) and one silver (2010 four-man). At World Championships he won another 14 medals (8-4-2), and at Europeans added 19 more medals (8-7-4). In 2008 Lange won the overall World Cup with the two-man bob and in 2001, 2003-04 and 2008 with the four-man bob.
Lange started his sports career as a luger until 1993 before turning to bob. At Vancouver in 2010, Lange was the flagbearer at the opening ceremony. He was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award.
After his active career, Lange moved to the coaching staff of the German Bobsleigh, Luge, and Skeleton Federation until 2016. From 2017-18 he coached the South Korean national team, and from 2018-22 coached the Chinese national team, along with Canadian bob pilot Pierre Lueders.
Lange also worked as a bobsleigh expert with German TV channels ARD and Eurosport, and also as a motivational speaker. He married high jumper Ariane Friedrich and they raised a son.
