Biography

Ejnar Levison represented Denmark in four consecutive Olympic Games from 1908 until 1924. He competed with the foil, épée, and sabre but had his best results individually in the épée events. In the team events, he narrowly missed a medal, placing fourth with the foil team in 1920 at Antwerpen (Antwerp). In the decisive encounter with the United States’ team Levison lost all his bouts. Levison won Danish champion titles with the foil (1910), with the épée (1909, 1910, 1921) and with the sabre (1914, 1924) as a member of the Fægteklubben af 1907 in København (Copenhagen). He also won a title at the Nordic Games and was president of the international fencing jury.

Levison graduated in 1901 from Nørrebro’s Latin and High School. Like his father he was trained as a printer in København, Paris, and the United States. From 1905-26, he was the owner of the publishing company J. D. Qvist & Comp. He acted as chairman of København’s Book Printers Association (1917-26) and as a judge in the Book Printing Arbitration Court (1909-26). Levison then settled as a landowner in Tunis, where he became chairman of the board of the French Cercle d’Escrime Noel Martinetti.

He was awarded the Norwegian St. Olav’s Order and the Tunisian Ni-chan-el-Iftikar Order. His first wife was the Frenchwoman Geneviéve Née whom he married in 1905. In 1924, Levison married his second wife, Anna Mathiasen.
