Gretsch won national titles with the sabre in 1938-39, 1946-48, and 1950; with the épée in 1935, 1938, 1947-48, and 1955; and with the foil in 1951 and 1957. He later became chairman of the Luxembourg Fencing Federation in 1998. In 2000 his club, EC Spora, created a fencing tournament in his honor.
