Biography

In the late 1950s and early 1960s Edy Schmit represented Luxembourg in international épée fencing competitions. In 1956 Schmit was selected to compete in both the individual and team épée events at the Melbourne Olympics. He won his pool in the individual event to progress to the quarter-finals, before being eliminated in the semi-finals of the tournament. In the team event Luxembourg lost both of their pool matches to be eliminated. He returned to the Olympics four years later, competing in just the team event at the Roma Games, losing 9–2 to Hungary in the quarter-finals. In 2008 Schmit was bestowed with the rank of Chevalier in the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
