Biography

During the 1960s Lithuanian rower Antanas Bagdonavičius represented the Soviet Union, winning medals at the Olympic Games, World Championships, and the European Championships. Bagdonavičius, Zigmas Jukna, and coxswain Igor Rudakov won silver in the coxed pairs at the 1960 Roma Olympics. Bagdonavičius and Jukna became the first rowers from Lithuania to win an Olympic medal. At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics he was part of the eight crew that finished fifth, before winning bronze in the eight at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. At the World Rowing Championships he won silver in the eight in 1962 and silver in the coxless four in 1966. Bagdonavičius won three gold medals at the European Rowing Championships, winning the coxed pair (1961), coxless four (1965), and the coxed four (1967). He also won silver in the eight in 1963 and 1964. Bagdonavičius and Jukna were named as the Lithuanian Sportspersons of the Year in 1960 and 1961, with Bagdonavičius named as the Sports Legend of the Year in a 2018 ceremony in Vilnius.
