Biography

West German swimmer Birgit Klomp from Düsseldorf was a member of the 4x100 freestyle relay team that finished fourth at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics when she and her team-mates Ingrid Künzel, Hertha Haase and Kati Jansen lost out on the bronze medal by only 4/10 seconds. Individually, Klomp was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 100 freestyle.

She was the West German 100 freestyle champion in 1955 and the 100 and 400 freestyle champion in 1956. Klomp won the bronze medal at the 1958 European Championships with the 4x100 freestyle relay team. Her husband Friedhelm Osselmann and their sons Rainer and non-Olympian Karl Osselmann were water polo internationals.
