Jan Hempel was a German diver who represented East Germany at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and finished fifth in the platform event. At the 1992 Barcelona, 1996 Atlanta, and 2000 Sydney Olympics, Hempel represented re-unified Germany. In 1992, he finished an unlucky fourth in the platform event, and was eliminated in the springboard qualification round. At Atlanta he won the platform silver medal and was seventh in the springboard. In 2000, he partnered with Heiko Meyer in the synchronized platform event and won the bronze medal. He did not reach the final of the individual platform event.
At the 1998 World Championships Hempel won a silver and bronze medal, and at the Europeans, in total, he won four gold, four silver and two bronze medals. By profession, he became a physiotherapist and individual personal trainer, and founded his own fitness studio at Meißen.
