At the Rome Olympics, Gary Tobian gave the U.S. their ninth straight victory on the springboard with a victory over his teammate, Sam Hall. In 1959 Tobian, of the Los Angeles AC and Southern Cal, was the Pan American Games springboard champion, after winning bronze at the 1955 Pan American Games in platform, and in 1960 he took the AAU platform title for the sixth straight year. He also won the AAU springboard, both indoors and out, in 1958.
