Fred Hammer’s father Paul represented Luxembourg in track and field athletics at the 1920 and 1924 Summer Olympics and carried his nation’s flag at the latter tournament. Fred followed in his father’s footsteps and took up track and field at a young age, making his international début for Luxembourg at the 1950 European Championships. There, he came in sixth in the long jump and was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 100 metres and the heats of the 200 metres. His next stop was the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where he was eliminated in the first round of the 200 metres, 400 metres, and the 4x400 metres relay, the latter alongside Roby Schaeffer, Jean Hamilius, and Gérard Rasquin. Four years later, at the 1956 Melbourne Games, he was eliminated in the opening round of the 200 metres and the long jump.
Personal Bests: 200 – 22.0 (1950); 400 – 49.4 (1952); LJ – 7.31 (1956).
