Biography

Dutch track and field athlete Elisabeth Goverdina “Lies” Koning represented the Gita sports club in Haarlem where she specialised as a sprinter. In 1936 Koning became the national champion in the 100 metres, earning herself a place on the Dutch Olympic team. At the 1936 Berlin Games she ran in the 100 metres and the 4 × 100 metres relay, finishing fifth in the latter. The relay team of Koning, Kitty ter Braake, Fanny Koen, and Ali de Vries ran 48.4 seconds in the first round, setting a Dutch national record that stood until 1946. Koning later moved to Canada where she lived for the rest of her life.
