Swiss track athlete Josef Imbach represented CA Genève where he specialised in sprinting. At the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics Imbach reached the quarter-finals of the 100 metres and the semi-finals of the 200 metres. He also ran in the 4 × 100 metres relay but the Swiss team finished in last place in their heat.
Four years later Imbach ran in the 400 metres at the 1924 Paris Olympics where he won his heat, albeit as the only athlete in race, before setting an Olympic record in the quarter-finals. He then finished second in his semi-final advancing to the final, but failed to finish after tripping during the race. Imbach was also part of the Swiss quartet that reached the final of the 4 × 100 metres relay, but the team was disqualified.
