During his career, Ukrainian Leonid Bartenev competed at two Olympic Games (1956, 1960), winning the 4x100 relay silver at both Games and a 4x100 relay bronze at the 1954 and 1958 European Championships. His best individual finish at those championships was reaching the semi-finals of the 100 and 200 at the 1958 Europeans. Bartenev also won the 100 at the 1955 World Student Games and was the Soviet 100 champion in 1958, 200 champion in 1957 and 1959, and 4x100 relay champion in 1955, and 1958-59.
After finishing his sports career, Bartenev worked as an athletics coach. From 1961-84, he was head coach of the Soviet national track & field sprint team and he was coach of the 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976 and 1980 Soviet Olympic teams. From 1970-90 he also worked as an athletics coach with Dynamo Moskva.
