Carsten Embach

Carsten Embach was a former East German long jumper with a PB of 8.01 metres, who turned to bobsledding early in 1987, although he was still active as a long jumper. He managed to win the last East German indoor long jump title in 1990 before German reunification. He also had three third places outdoors in 1988-90 and earned a fifth place at the 1990 European Indoor Championships.

He had more success as the brakeman of four-man bobs winning a bronze at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics with pilot Wolfgang Hoppe, Ulf Hielscher and René Hannemann, as well as a gold medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics with pilot André Lange. With Hoppe he also won the World Championships in 1995 and 1997, adding a bronze medal in 1996. They also won a gold medal at the 1996 European Championships, with a silver one year later.

After Hoppe’s retirement Embach changed to Lange’s team of and with him won the 2000 and the 2003 World Championships, winning a silver in 2001. At the European Championships they completed their collection with a gold in 2002, a silver in 2003, and two bronzes in 1999 and 2001. Embach graduated as a sports teacher who then turned to coaching with the German national team.
