Jim McManus competed at the tennis demonstration events held alongside the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, playing in both Mexico City and Guadalajara. McManus turned professional in 1968 and is best known as a founding member of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) in 1972. He was an original member of its Board of Directors.
McManus won eight professional doubles titles. At Grand Slam events he reached the fourth round of the 1972 Wimbledon Championships in singles, and the semi-finals in doubles at the 1968 US Open. McManus attended the University of California.
