Nick Phipps began his sporting career as a track and field athlete who competed in the decathlon, being a specialist in the pole vault. Phipps, however, will be best remembered as representing Great Britain on the ice in the bobsleigh. At the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics he was part of the crew in the second Team GB sled that finished 15th. He continued to compete during the 1980s, winning bronze at the World Cup in the combined event in the 1985–86 season. Phipps also won silver in the two-man and four-man events in 1985, although those events were classified as unofficial. In December 1985 he and Alan Cearns won gold in Cortina d’Ampezzo, setting a track record in the process. Three years later Phipps travelled to the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Although he did not compete in Calgary, he did have the honour of being the flagbearer at the Opening Ceremony. Four years later he competed in the two-man and four-man events at the 1992 Albertville Olympics, finishing 13th in both.
