One extra event was added to the judo program, with an extra-lightweight class added for athletes of 60 kg. [132 lbs.] or less. The judo matches were held at the Sports Palace next to the Central Lenin Stadium. It was considered an excellent venue with good sight lines for all matches. The organization, however, was less than top-notch, with judo experts blaming the International Judo Federation officials, and not the Moskva organizers. Several mix-ups in the order of the matches occurred and the refereeing was uneven throughout the tournament. The American-led boycott also affected the quality of the tournament, which almost turned into a European Championship without the US, German, Japanese, and Korean fighters.
