The first Olympic fencing tournament of the post-Soviet era took place at the Palacio de la Metalurgia which was originally built for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. The former Soviet Union still had some success via the Unified team’s victory in the team sabre but the majority of the Olympic titles headed to Western Europe. Germany, Italy and France all won a pair of gold medals with France and the Unified Team winning the most medals of all colours with five each. The only fencer to return home with two gold medals was Italy’s Giovanna Trillini. After an absence of 12 years Cuba returned to the Olympic fold and won their first fencing medals in 88 years. A new format was introduced in the individual events whereby bouts were contested over 3 sets. A set was won by the first person to score five hits.
