Figure Skating at the 1992 Winter Olympics

There were no longer compulsory figures to be skated for men and women, those having been eliminated from international competition after the 1991 World Championships. The competitions were still scored by factored placements, and with only two phases for men and women, the factors were now 33.3% (1/3rd) for the short program and 66.7% (2/3rd) for the free skate. With compulsories eliminated, any skater placing in the top three in the short program would win the competition by winning the free skate. There were no changes to the pairs program or scoring system. A minor change occurred in ice dancing. Previously, there had been three phases, with several compulsory dances constituting one phase, the second phase being the optional set pattern dance, followed by a free dance. The compulsory dances were now separated into two dances and two separate phases, with the factors being 10% for each compulsory dance, 30% for the optional set pattern dance, and 50% for the free dance.
