Olympic shooting in 2012 was contested at the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich, a district in southeast London located in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Shooting in both 1908 and 1948 had been contested at Bisley and the original shooting schedule was planned again for Bisley in Surrey, but the distance from most of the venues in east London necessitated the change to Woolwich. The pistols used in the shooting events are illegal in Great Britain and the government had to give a special dispensation to allow them to be brought into the country.
There was no change to the shooting program since the 2008 Olympics, with men contesting nine events and women six. China won the most medals with seven in all, but Korea (South) and the United States both won three gold medals. The biggest story was likely the gold medal in women’s skeet won by Kim Rhode (USA), which gave her shooting medals at five consecutive Olympics, and three golds, going back to 1996.
