Trampolining was invented in 1934 by American gymnast George Nissen who, after watching trapeze acrobats perform tricks while bouncing off safety nets, built the first prototype trampoline to recreate their acrobatics. The first Trampoline World Championships were organized in London in 1964, and the sport joined the International Gymnastics Federation 34 years later. Trampolining made its Olympic début at Sydney in 2000, with men’s and women’s competitions. The number of events (two) has remained unchanged since then.
At Paris 2024, both the women’s and men’s events were held on the same day, 2 August, with an equal number of 16 participants. The event format was unchanged from 2020, in which the top eight scores advanced to the finals from the qualifying rounds. Gymnasts were to perform both a compulsory and voluntary routine, each consisting of 10 skills, scored in slightly differing formats.
