The World Cup champion in giant slalom in 1970-72 was Gustavo Thoeni. The 1970 World Champion was Austrian Karl Schranz, who, three days before the Sapporo Olympics opened, was banned by the IOC for professionalism. A controversial decision, it kept Schranz from his last chance to win an Olympic gold medal. The first run leader was Norway’s Erik Håker, with Thoeni in third place. But Håker fell early on the second run and that left it open for the Italian. Thoeni posted the second best time on run two to win the gold medal. The second run was led by Swiss Edy Bruggmann, who had been only 10th after the first run, but moved up toe the silver medal.
