The sprint event was considered wide open. Four different Norwegian men had won World Cup sprints in the 2025/26 season, including Johan-Olav Botn, already a 2026 gold medalist in the 20 km event. France had Quentin Fillon Maillet, the silver medalist in the sprint at Beijing 2022. The 2025 World champion was Johannes Thingnes Bø, but the Bø brothers, gold and bronze in the event in 2022, had retired at the end of the 2025 season.

The top five finishers all had perfect shooting, so it came down to the ski times. Fillon Maillet’s teammate Émilien Jacquelin led at the two shooting ranges, but he was passed first by Fillon Maillet and would drop off the podium, eventually finishing fourth only 0.2 seconds behind Lægreid, after physically collapsing in the last lap.

Silver went to Norway’s Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen, 13.7 seconds in arrears, with his teammate Sturla Holm Lægreid winning his second bronze medal of the 2026 Winter Olympics, after he finished third in the 20 km event. The top nine finishers were all from France (3), Norway (4), and Sweden (2).
