A new addition to the Olympic programme, the welterweight category had seen success for Asian fighters since the 2016 Olympics with World Championship medals from Kazakhstan, Chinese Taipei, India, and China. Even the World Champion was from the Asian part of Turkey. Busenaz Sürmeneli, a 23-year-old from the northwestern Turkish town of Bursa, became her country’s first ever boxing gold medallist.

Sürmeneli recorded unanimous points decisions in her first three contests before edging a hard-fought final with China’s Gu Hong. Gong started well but a turning point came in the second round when she was penalised a point for holding in addition to losing the round on the judges’ scorecards. The Chinese fighter fought back in the final round but by then the damage was done and Sürmeneli was ahead on three of the five scorecards. Lovlina Borgohain of India and Oshae Jones of the USA were the losing semi-finalists and took home the bronze medals.
