The top two seeds were Hungary’s Viktor Lőrincz and Ukrainian Zhan Beleniuk. The day before this event, Lőrincz’s brother Tamás Lőrincz had won gold at 77 kg in Greco-Roman wrestling. Beleniuk was the 2019 World Champion, having beaten Lőrincz in the final of that event. He was the product of a Ukrainian mother and a Rwandan father and was a member of the Ukrainian Parliament, the first black person to serve in that body.

Lőrincz and Beleniuk made it to the final, although they had to survive the quarter-finals, when they both won only on judges’ decisions, after 1-1 ties with their opponents. The final saw the same result as the 2019 Worlds, as Beleniuk won the gold medal by decision, 5-1. The bronze medals went to German Denis Kudla, who won his repêchage final over Egypt’s Mohamed Metwally by fall; and Serbian Zurabi Datunashvili, who defeated Croatian Ivan Huklek on points.
