Natalie Geisenberger (Germany) won her third consecutive gold medal in the women’s luge singles. She became the fourth woman to win three straight golds in an individual event at the Olympic Winter Games, after Sonja Henie (Norway) in figure skating singles (1928-36), Bonnie Blair (USA) in speedskating 500 metres (1988-94), and Claudia Pechstein (Germany) in speedskating 5,000 metres (1994-2002).
This was Geisenberger’s fifth gold medal, as she also won golds in the mixed team relay in 2014 and 2018. She became the first luge slider with five gold medals, breaking a tie she had held with fellow Germans Tobias Arlt and Tobias Wendl.
Another German slider, Anna Berreiter, took silver on her Olympic début. Both were helped when their favoured teammate, Julia Taubitz, the 2021 World Champion and 2020 overall World Cup champion, who led after the first run in a track record, fell on the second run. She finished in 26th place for the run, and could place no better than sixth overall.
Tatyana Ivanova (ROC) won the bronze medal, her second Olympic medal in her third Olympic appearance. She also won a silver medal in the 2014 team relay.
Germany won their seventh consecutive gold medal in women’s singles. Including the former German Democratic Republic (East) and the Federal Republic of Germany (West), German sliders have now won 12 of the 16 gold medals awarded in this event, and 35 of the 48 medals.
This was the third consecutive Olympics at which Germany had finished 1-2 in this event. They also did this in 1964, 1998, 2002, and 2006, and the German Democratic Republic had 1-2 placements in 1972, 1976, 1984, and 1988.
