The weight limit for this division had changed from 64-69 kg at the Tokyo Games to 60-66 kg for Paris. The winner of the division was Algerian Imane Khelif, who was disqualified from the 2023 World Championships for failing gender eligibility tests, although the reasons were never made explicit, and no public results have ever demonstrated her ineligibility. The controversy was ignited after she defeated Italy’s Angela Carini in only 46 seconds in her first bout, and Carini reportedly complained of the contest being unfair. The following day, Carini apologised to Khelif for her comments.

Khelif was to win her next two bouts against Hungarian Luca Hámori and Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng by unanimous decisions, to face second seed and 2023 World Champion Yang Liu of China in the final, a contest Khelif also won by a unanimous decision to become Algeria’s first female Olympic boxing champion. In her semi-final, Yang had defeated Chen Nien-Chin (TPE), a silver medalist from the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics. The top seed, 2023 World Champion and reigning Olympic Champion, Turkey’s Busenaz Sürmeneli, was narrowly defeated by Suwannapheng in her quarter-final bout.
