10 kilometres Open Water, Women

Date 8 August 2024 — 07:30
StatusOlympic
LocationRiver Seine, Pont Alexandre III, Paris, France
Participants24 from 17 countries
FormatFinal only. Lap Length 1.67 km

The competition took place on the River Seine, near the Pont Alexander III bridge, with the athletes swimming six laps of the river. The favorite was the Netherlands Sharon van Rouwendaal, who was World Champion in 2022 and 2024, and had won gold in the Olympic event in 2016 and silver in 2020. The other medals were hard to predict, although defending Olympic champion Ana Marcela Cunha was expected to challenge for the podium.

By lap four, three athletes had opened a gap on the field – van Rouwendaal, Australian Moesha Johnson and Italian Ginevra Taddeucci. Johnson led after five laps but van Rouwendaal had the strongest finish to pull ahead and win gold, with Johnson second and Taddeucci taking bronze. Van Rouwendaal’s second gold medal in the event was the first time any swimmer had won two golds in Olympic marathon swimming. Cunha was never in the medal chase although she eventually finished fourth.
