The reigning World champion, France’s Magda Wiet-Hénin, was also the home crowd favorite, but her gold medal hopes were crushed in the round of 16 by the 18-year-old American fighter Kristina Teachout. In the next round, Teachout lost to another teenager, Hungary’s Viviana Márton, who in her first match ousted two-time Olympic bronze medalist Ruth Gbagbi of the Ivory Coast.

In the semi-final, Márton defeated Belgium’s World No.1 and 2022 World champion Sarah Chaâri, and then in the final Serbia’s Aleksandra Perišić. Márton’s twin sister, Luana, became the first Hungarian taekwondo athlete to win a World Championship gold medal in 2023 and, at Paris, Viviana won the first Olympic gold medal for Hungary. After the final, she celebrated by waving the flags of Hungary and the Canary Islands. Márton was born in Tenerife, as her parents moved to the Canaries in the early 2000s. Teachout and Chaâri won the bronze medals.
