Taekwondo at the 2024 Summer Olympics

Dates 7 – 10 August 2024
Medal Events 8
Venues Grand Palais, Paris, France

The taekwondo competitions at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris ran from 7-10 August, at the Grand Palais strip. A total of 128 fighters, with an equal distribution between men and women, competed across eight different weight categories (four per gender), the same amount as at all editions since Beijing 2008. Each weight category was composed of sixteen fighters; however, this figure could increase if additional athletes were invited and selected from the Refugee Olympic Team.

Only one country, South Korea, won two gold medals, and six countries won more than one medal. For South Korea, these were rehabilitation Games. They did not win a single gold medal in Tokyo, which was seen as a major failure, but two gold medals in the first two days of competition in Paris made this a memorable Olympics for the Koreans. Iran was another country that improved on its Tokyo 2020 results. They had won taekwondo medals at every Olympic Games, but failed to win any in Tokyo. In Paris, they won four, which was the country’s best result since taekwondo became an Olympic sport. On the final day of competition, Arian Salimi won gold and helped Iran finish second in the medal table.

Belgium, Brazil, and Hungary won their very first taekwondo Olympic medals, with Hungary’s medal being gold. Panipak Wongpattanakit of Thailand and Ulugbek Rashitov of Uzbekistan won gold in Tokyo and successfully retained their titles in Paris.

Kimia Alizadeh competed in her third Olympics and won her second bronze medal. The former Iranian athlete, who won Iran’s first medal in women’s taekwondo at Rio 2016, represented the Refugee Olympic Team in Tokyo. She began representing Bulgaria in 2024, however, and won her second bronze medal for the country.
