Slovenia’s Benjamin Savšek was the defending champion and the favorite, as the World Champion in the event in 2023 and European Champion in 2022. His biggest challenge was expected to come from his countryman, Luka Božič, who had 23 podium finishes in World Cup events, but was eventually unable to compete at Paris because of an injury and was left off the Slovakian team.
In his first Olympic event, Nicolas Gestin (FRA), silver medalist at the 2023 World Championships, won the men’s canoe singles slalom in dominant fashion, with a margin of 5.48 seconds total time over Adam Burgess (GBR) in second place. This was the fifth victory in this event for France, after Tony Estanguet won in 2000, 2004, and 2012, and Denis Gargaud Chanut won in 2016.
Matej Beňuš (SVK) finished third for the bronze, his second Olympic medal, after finishing second in the event in 2016.
